Yakuza Kiwami launches for PC on Feb

Feel the HEAT! Yakuza Kiwami is releasing on Steam on February 19th. This continues the trend of SEGA porting their titles to the PC. The port was announced during E3 2018 alongside Yakuza 0 and Valkyria Chronicles 4Catherine “Classic” (the original released on PS3 and Xbox 360) was released on Steam earlier in January. SEGA usually doesn’t release other titles besides Sonic to PC. These may be signs of the company changing their release methods to consoles and PC rather than consoles exclusively.

Valve will offer more money for Successful Games

When you sell your game on Valve, the company takes 30 percent of your revenue for using it as a platform for distribution. It’s a common practice for business such as PlayStation and Xbox but Valve has been criticized lately for their user review system and lack of marketing support for new games. Steam is packed with thousands of games and nearly impossible to filter through them all. It’s difficult for developers to sell their game if they don’t understand Steam’s algorithms. They weren’t able to contact a Valve personal support and developers felt that the company didn’t “deserve” the 30 percent in revenue. To potentially earn developers’ trust again, Valve is offering them more money based on the success of their games.

Stated on November 30th, Valve stated

Starting from October 1, 2018 (i.e. revenues prior to that date are not included), when a game makes over $10 million on Steam, the revenue share for that application will adjust to 75%/25% on earnings beyond $10M. At $50 million, the revenue share will adjust to 80%/20% on earnings beyond $50M. Revenue includes game packages, DLC, in-game sales, and Community Marketplace game fees. Our hope is this change will reward the positive network effects generated by developers of big games, further aligning their interests with Steam and the community.

Valve is also allowing developers to speak about their game sale on Steam.

Who does this benefit?

A lot of big brand name titles such as Fallout or Call of Duty will see bigger profit margins. However, smaller companies and developers will still have difficulties presenting their games to a mass audience. There are too many games on Steam, especially because any game can be on their market.

The changes are to incentivize more companies to put their games on PC only through Steam. With more companies hosting their own platforms such as Blizzard’s BattleNet, Ubisoft’s Uplay, EA’s Origin, and Discord, Valve has more competition. While their competitors have less selection, it’s easier to search and find a game you enjoy.

The profit changes won’t hurt Valve too bad. It’s rare for a title to make that much on Steam alone unless you’re a huge publisher. The mass majority won’t even make $10 million but bigger companies may just place their games on Steam to save money.

The End of Evolve

I remember watching a Let’s Play of Evolve in 2014 before the game was officially launched. The tension of chasing a huge monster before it becomes too strong was exciting and playing the monster was exciting. The game received great praise in 2014 and won several rewards prior to Evolve‘s launch. Published by 2K Interactive, Evolve was a multiplayer focused 3rd person shooter where four players play as Hunters while one played as a monster that sought resources to “evolve.” It was the first game from Turtle Rock Studios who spun off from Valve in 2011 who worked on Left for DeadHowever, the myriad of downloadable content, lack of story and interesting game types led to mixed reviews and loss of player base.

What happened?

Evolve launched on February 10th, 2015 for $60. Despite being a commercial success, the mixed reviews were apparent from Day One. Many players criticized the sole focus on multiplayer that quickly became dull. The Hunter gameplay was praised with the different class types but playing as the monster was limited. The biggest issue was the massive amounts of Day One downloadable content.  On Day One, to acquire all the DLC, it cost $136. Different monsters and hunters were all locked behind a paywall and player fatigue was fast. in July 2016, 2K made the game free-to-play due to lack of player base but the damage was done. 2K and Turtle Rock ended continuous support for the game four months later.

End of Evolve

Today, 2K announced that Evolve’s dedicated servers will be shut down on September 3, 2018. Several game features will be removed:

  • Hunt (Ranked)
    • Players will still be able to play Hunt by going into Quick play and Custom games
  • Player Profile data
  • Leaderboards will no longer be populated with player data
  • The in-game store will be removed
  • The newsfeed will be unavailable
  • Player Badges will be unavailable

Peer-to-peer multiplayer will be the only method to play multiplayer meaning your speed is based on other players’ computers. The features below will remain.

    • Evacuation
    • Custom games
  • Single Player (solo vs. AI) –

Strangely, 2K encourages players to use all their keys or purchase whatever content they would like before the servers close as they will no longer be sold. In my opinion, the rest of the content should be released for free.

Bitcoins may have affect on Graphic Card prices

If you’ve been interested in purchasing a graphics cards with GPU (graphics processing unit) for your computer, you might have noticed the price has increased above the MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price). The demand for stronger graphics cards may relate to the increase in crypto mining for cryptocurrency. 2017 has seen a rise in value. Bitcoin alone is valued at over $11,000 for the first time this month.

At their peak, certain GPUs such as the RX570 could mine up to $5 worth of cryptocurrency. It eventually fell to $1.50 to per day as cryptocurrencies have mechanisms to control the rate of coin generation. The profitability is rising up in mining cryptocurrency. While a stronger GPU doesn’t effect Bitcoin mining rate, it does affect other cryptocurrency mining rate.

If you’re looking to buy a new graphics card this holiday season, it is recommended to purchase it soon as the price isn’t expected to drop based on PC Magazine‘s advice.
